It’s VERY important to adhere to the diet they give you. You can suffer major complications if you don’t follow it strictly.
A high-protein, calorie restricted diet can be useful prior to surgery, because it can decrease the size of the liver, which can shorten operating time.
Adopting a healthy, reduced calorie diet plan prior to bariatric surgery gets you into the habit of eating less, eating healthy and making the essential dietary changes that will be required after your bariatric surgery, and for the rest of your life.
**EDIT**
For those who think that having the surgery is the “easy way out”, you couldn’t be more wrong. Many people who have the surgery only have it as a last resort, after numerous diets and fitness programs. Some people simply can not lose weight, no matter what they do… either because their body functions differently, they metabolize food differently, or because they’re on medications that prevent them from it.
There’s nothing “easy” about gastric bypass at all. You have to literally learn to eat all over again. You have to give up many of the foods that you love. Alcohol… birthday cake… popcorn… even bubble gum. You can’t ever drink with your meals again. You have to take ONE BITE of food every ten minutes… if you eat too fast, it will stack up and make you vomit… or, you’ll get terrible diarrhea.
The majority of the people who have this procedure really are using it as a last resort. As for the people who do it because they think it’s easy?? They’re SO wrong!!
