Is the LapBand a possibility AFTER gastric bypass surgery?

  • nickipettis posted: 02 Sep at 10:29 am

    i think it could be done physically.
    You do have a SMALL stomach left. but it is there.

    But i think most doctors would refuse to do the surgery. i think that docs would be worried about “how small was too small for the stomach” (sort of the argument you and your friend are already having) and also that
    “if gastric bypass did not work for this person, why should a lapband work?”

    Also, some people who had gastric bypass surgery had there stomach stapled. and sometimes those staples pull loose. i really don’t see any reason why that person could not have a lapband.

    ============
    if it all comes down to “How small is your stomach,” that might vary between individuals, so that some people could also have a lapband, while others could not.

    The lap band is simply a band around the stomach making it smaller, but food and meds that you take still pass through the large and small intestine where the nutrients are absorbed, which are still in tact. In gastric bypass, sections of the intestine are bypassed and the stomach is actually cut and made smaller. To me, it would make sense that it would not be possible to have lap band surgery after gastric bypass.

    While it IS PLAUSIBLE for somebody to have LapBand surgery sometime after gastric bypass surgery, but it’s IMPRACTICAL to do so.

    It’s similar to having gastric bypass surgery TWICE. If the first surgery failed, why would a second attempt this work? HOWEVER, LapBand surgery is a lot easier to reverse (or readjust) since you’re not mutilating any organs (excluding skin) in the process.

    While I cannot stop anybody doing such actions, I hope this my view can shed some light on the practical aspect here.

    Doesn’t the LapBand and Gastric Bypass do the same thing.. The only difference is that the LapBand can be removed while the Gastric Bypass cannot.
    I see no reason why you would need both because they do the same exact thing, which is make your stomach smaller so you don’t eat as much.

    I had my gastric bypass surgery through Forerunners Healthcare Consultants in India I don’t regret it at all I had a baby since then and I’m still able to take the weight off so far i am very happy. The key is to use a reputable surgeon. You want to be carefully screened beforehand to make sure you are a good candidate. Since my surgery I can walk without getting tired, I can play with my son; I can walk down the street with my head held high. I feel pretty for the fist time in years. I was given another shot at life. The surgery is a tool and how well that tool works is up to you!!

    I would do it again in a heartbeat. I would recommend to every one who is suffering from the same problems as I did before but I would urge anyone who is interested to seek the best surgeon possible and make the decision based on the surgeon’s recommendations and your own personal goals!! Make sure the reasons for the surgery are the right one. The surgery isn’t for someone who just “wants to be skinny”. Do it for your health, for your life, for family. FOR YOU.

    Hope this helps.
