In a word, yes, you can. In fact, my doctor said before one gets a gastric bypass they should go on the same diet that is given to bypass patients for at least a week. Afterwards, if they find they can live like that for the rest of their lives, they can talk to a physician about the operation. He claims this is important because bypass surgery dramatically changes your life forever.
I tend to agree with him. I suspect you might lose less weight on the same diet as one who has the surgery due to your body metabolising the food better, but you will still lose weight.
