Cosmetic weight loss plastic surgery or bariatric surgery is fast gaining popularity because increasing affluence and knowledge of using surgery as a form of targetted or fast weight loss.

Patients may opt for a weight loss plastic surgery out of reshaping their body shape or simply to improve their health and escape from severe obesity.

There are basically three basic types of weight loss plastic surgery :-

There are the restrictive surgical procedures like the lap band surgery to make the stomach smaller and thus limiting food consumption.

Then there are the malabsorptive surgeries to shorten the intestine that comes in contact with food so that the body absorbs less calories from the food consumed.

Finally, there are surgeries that combine both restrictive and malasorptive plastic surgeries.

Restrictive surgeries encourage easy weight loss in two ways. First, the surgeries reduce the amount of food consumed. The stomach is shrunk by creating a small pouch at the top of where food enters and therefore less food is consumed by the patients. Restrictive surgery also make patients feel full longer because the lower outlet of the pouch is made smaller so that food empties slowly. Lap band cosmetic weight loss surgery and Vertical banded gastroplasty are examples of restrictive surgeries.

Gastric bypass surgery is a combination both the restrictive and the malabsorptive surgery. This surgery is done by creating a small stomach pouch to restrict the amount of food intake.Then a bypass of the duodenum and other parts of the intestine is constructed to cause malabsorption. Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and Distal Gastric Bypass are examples of the gastric bypass weight loss plastic surgery.

What are the risks of weight loss surgeries?

Health risks are almost the same for both restrictive and gastric bypass surgeries although the risk of nutritional deficiencies for calcium, Vitamin B12 and iron are higherin gastric bypass surgery patients. Intestinal leaking may also occur.

Gastric bypass surgery patients may experienced the “Dumping Syndrome.” This is when food moves too fast through the small intestine and the patient may experience nausea, cold sweat, dizzy and fainting spells, weakness and occasionally, even diarrhea.

Patients can opt for the either the traditional open surgery or laparoscopic sugery the latter being that there will be smaller scars as well as less down time since the bariatric weight loss surgery patient can recover faster.

As with any form of surgeries, patients must ask their surgeons which for of cosmetic surgery is best suited for them. Before a patient is committed to undergo a surgery, he must have tried other healthy means to lose weight. A weight loss surgery should always be the last option when all other efforts failed to help the patient to reduce weight.

Surgery For Weight Loss – Is It Time For You To Lose A Few Pounds?

These days weight loss is a problem that is faced by all factions of society. There are a plethora of diet and exercise regimes available that promise a new you. Most work if followed diligently but they also require a continuous control on food intake so the lost weight does not come back. Surgery is an option when exercise and diet have had no effect and the patient has a body mass index of over 35 and is at risk for life threatening health problems.

Bariatric surgery is expensive – the average cost goes from $20,000 to $50,000 depending on the surgeon, hospital or clinic. It has some side effects and requires some lifestyle changes. The patient must be motivated and should be aware of the associated risks. There is a probable additional cost of some plastic surgery to remove the ugliness left by the bariatric surgery which has to be factored in.

Bariatric surgery is the surgical reduction of stomach volume which involves the use of two procedures called the gastric bypass and gastric banding. Bypass surgery is more common and is known to produce faster results but on the other hand gastric banding is reversible and quite easily too. In both procedures stomach volume is reduced to 30ml and food intake post surgery has to decrease with the food being properly chewed. One of the benefits of this type of surgery is that along with weight loss there is a reversal of diseases like Type II diabetes and sleep apnea.

A new smaller stomach is created by a line of staples which is then connected to a loop of the small bowel in the gastric bypass procedure. While in gastric banding, a silicone band is placed around the upper stomach creating a small reservoir as well as a restricted passage to the lower stomach. The average length of surgery is about 2 hours. This surgery is done using laparoscopic technology where a small video camera and several tiny, customized instruments are used and it involves smaller incisions, lesser scarring, less pain and fairly quick recovery. Complications may include things like respiratory failure, staple leaking, stenosis (obstruction of stomach) and bleeding. The mortality rate for bariatric surgery is an estimated 0.1% to 1-2% but no comprehensive data is available.

The surgeon you go to must be able to give you a one-on-one consultation and must have done hundreds of such surgeries with an excellent success rate. You have to be comfortable with your surgeon and your friends and family must be able to interact with him. Check with your family doctor for a recommendation or go online for information. Make a list of what you would like to find in a prospective surgeon and try and match the list as much as possible.

Your stay in the hospitable would be around 2 to 3 days and you would need at least 3 to 6 weeks of post operative rest. There is some discomfort to be experienced for some days and intake of solid food will not be allowed as your body needs to adjust to the new settings done. Food consumption will be controlled and a diet may be allowed which might exclude fats, sugars and carbohydrates.

Arkansas offers its people unparalleled opportunities to enjoy life through its natural beauty, its friendly business climate, and its wealth of fine dining. Sadly, with the last of these, another opportunity presents itself: the opportunity to gain weight. In fact, here in the Natural State, some 63% of the population is overweight or obese.

And theres nothing natural about obesity, which is the condition of being significantly above ones healthy weight. Obesity destroys lives. It is the second leading cause of preventable death in the United States, and may lead to other life-threatening illnesses, called co-morbidities, such heart disease, high blood pressure, Type II diabetes, and even cancer. In fact, many scientists and physicians believe that the obesity epidemic is the most serious health threat facing the population of our state.

Dealing with Obesity

Living with obesity is a struggle. Fad diets, exercise programs, or so-called weight-loss pills are the traditional treatments folks here often try in their attempts to lose significant weigh. Sadly, however, most quickly regain the lost weight later on.

Fortunately, the people of our state are fighting back against the epidemic of obesity. The Arkansas 5 a Day Coalitions has begun a Worksite Challenge: Fit with 5 program that focuses on increasing physical activity in the workplace and better eating habits. The Arkansas Diabetes Control Program is a partnership between pharmaceutical manufacturers and state agencies to offer face-to-face diabetes self-management training from trained diabetes educators, who show patients how to make healthy changes in their life. And on the prevention front, the state legislature recently enacted Act 1220, a comprehensive program for public schools in our state that is designed to establish health eating and lifestyle habits in children at risk from obesity. The Act mandates increased physical education levels for all students, and issues parents a BMI-based weight report card along with regular grade assessments to help them keep up with their childrens health.

For the dangerously obese, another option exists: weight loss surgery. Surgical weight loss procedures also known as bariatric surgery — have been proven to help ease (and in some cases completely resolve) obesity-related health problems for individuals with a body mass index of 35 or higher and one or more co-morbidities, which are health conditions related to obesity. It can also help those who are obese but have no co-morbidities to reach their ideal weight and lessen their chances of developing obesity-related health problems down the road.

About Weight Loss Surgery

The three main types of weight loss surgery are malabsorptive, restrictive and combination surgery, each with different risks and benefits. Malabsorptive procedures alter the patients intestinal tract, changing the way it absorbs calories and nutrients; restrictive procedures create a small stomach pouch that limits the amount of food needed for the patient to feel full; and combination procedures create a small stomach pouch and alter the intestinal tract.

Weight loss surgery is only a part of the comprehensive medical treatment of obesity. Patients who fail to alter their lifestyles after surgery may regain any weight lost. Those considering bariatric surgery to manage their obesity should consult with their physician regarding the risks and possible outcomes of these procedures before making a decision.

Considering Surgical Weight Loss

For those with morbid obesity or with co-morbidities, weight loss surgery can be a true lifesaver. It is not, however, magic. Recovery from obesity is a whole-life process, and the only way to beat it is with medical treatment, lifestyle changes and, if necessary, with surgery.

How Lazy Could You Be … Gastric Bypass?

Okay, I understand when you are 400+ Pounds and you aren’t capable of moving and it becomes life threating. But I was on You Tube and I see this girl that got bypass at 260 pounds, seriously? How lazy could that be? i weigh 275 pounds I am 5’7 and perfectly capable of losing the weight, I just can’t exactly TRY to right now as I am 4 months and 2 weeks pregnant, HOWEVER I began my pregnancy at 290. I honestly see girls that are less then 220 pounds getting this surgery and its sad, thats so lazy, and unhealthy, their is risks that follow this surgery and if you aren’t bed ridden why risk life??? And get saggy skin just cuz you didn’t want to exercise or eat less… well everyone, Just post your opinions!!!! Lol….

Medical Tourism Company Helps Patient Get Prostate Surgery At A Fraction Of U.s. Prices

In February, Jonathan Reeder had never heard of medical tourism. But today, he sings praises to one such medical tourism company WorldMedAssist.com for finding him an affordable option for the prostate surgery he needed.

Reeder knew when he left his dental practice in Houston to do dental contract work, he’d either need to self-insure or find an affordable private pay policy. While researching his options, he got alarming news from his doctor: his PSA test results had soared from an alert-level 5 to alarm-level 8. This put him into the dreaded category of “pre-existing condition,” and therefore uninsurable.

When his biopsy came back positive for prostate cancer in February, he had three alternatives: watch and wait, radiation, or surgery. Then came more bad news: The surgeon’s fee alone would cost $36,000. “Who knows what the total would have been by the time you add in hospital fees, anesthesiologist, tests, but probably around $50,000.” Reeder said.

His wife remembered an article they’d both read in AARP Magazine about medical tourism a few years earlier. Searching online under medical tourism, he found several companies offering to coordinate all details of his radical prostatectomy.

“Some websites were clumsy, some people I contacted were too aggressive, some had such broken English I couldn’t understand them,” Reeder recalled. “I finally landed on www.WorldMedAssist.com. I got in touch with Wouter Hoeberechts, the CEO, who did a lot of research on my options, hoping we could find a place that would do laparoscopic surgery using a robotic arm. Turns out, this was not an option for me.”

“Both my family physician and urologist checked out WorldMed Assist’s recommendation, and both agreed this was a good choice,” Reeder said. “The doctor is UK board certified, had a stellar reputation. I have a lot of friends and relatives whose U.S. physicians are from India, so I wasn’t at all nervous about my decision I knew India had a reputation for high quality medicine, and I learned that Apollo Hospital was affiliated with Johns Hopkins.”

The surgery was scheduled for May 9. “All I had to do was make the payment, book my travel and get on the plane. WorldMed Assist’s travel agency partner, Carson Wagonlit, got me a great fare, with good connections,” Reeder said. “WorldMed Assist set up phone consultations with my doctor in India and transferred my medical records. All I had to do was show up.”

When he arrived at India’s Hyderabad airport, he was met by an executive team, who shuttled him directly to Apollo, showed him to his room, and told him to rest up for a two-day battery of pre-op tests that would begin the next morning. “I didn’t have any medical procedures that first night, and they didn’t even charge me for the room!” he said.

The thoroughness of the pre-op work amazed Reeder. “Besides the typical tests, they did an MRI and a bone scan, plus put me on the treadmill to make sure my heart would take the surgery. This was all included in my $7500 bill. Imagine how many lines of additional charges would have been on my bill if I were doing this in the U.S.”

His surgery lasted two hours and forty minutes, then off to spend the night in the trauma intensive care unit. “Since my wife wasn’t able to go to India with me, Wouter called her at least four times during the 24 hours following my surgery,” he said. “He stayed on top of all the details, and relayed progress reports so she’d know whether I was coming home or if she could collect on my life insurance,” he said with a grin.

Reeder was discharged after three days. “Looking into the big brown eyes of nurses with such beautiful skin must be why I recovered so fast,” he smirked.

After his discharge, Reeder had a week to tour Hyderabad before returning to Apollo to have his staples removed. The one thing he wanted most to see was a sacred cow. He didn’t have to look far. “Cows walked down the middle of the road, creating chaotic traffic. No one wanted to hit a cow, so traffic would come to a complete stop, waiting for the cows to determine their course.”

Reeder’s experience in India turned him into a devoted fan of medical tourism. “As a dentist, I have more familiarity with the medical system than the average American. The figures are in. The number of overweight Americans is a startling 55% of the population. And, eight million people in the country are morbidly obese.

Morbid obesity is very dangerous. People are considered morbidly obese when their weight reaches 100 pounds over their ideal body weight for their height, or their body mass index (BMI) is 40 or higher. What was originally thought as an over consumption and under activity problem, is now considered a disease caused by a number of different factors including inheritance, environmental, cultural, socioeconomic and psychological. Whatever the cause, morbid obesity can result in a number of health issues and can lead to premature death, with over 400,000 deaths a year attributed to this problem.

For some people diet and exercise just don’t work. They try all of the latest fad diets and only seem to put back on what they may have lost, sometimes even more. These people who are morbidly obese are desperate. Desperate times call for desperate measures. This is where surgery comes to the rescue. Gastric bypass or bariatric surgical procedures are a lifesaver to many in this category. Modern advances in this operation have made it safer and more effective. New techniques also allow for laprascopic operations, which avoid large incisions in the abdomen. The cost is high, between $14,000-$50,000, but it is often covered by insurances. It is available to anyone with a BMI of 40 or more, or a BMI of 35 with medical complications as a result of obesity. A thorough psychological evaluation is required and those with eating disorders are not candidates.

There are three versions of bariatric surgery used. Two deal with reducing the stomach size, but do not interfere with the small intestine. These are gastric banding and vertical banded gastroplasty. The new smaller created stomach allows the patient to feel fuller quicker and thereby eat less. It also slows the time it takes for the food to empty from the stomach. In this case, the body absorbs all food eaten. Unfortunately, it is possible to eat more and more over a period of time and stretch the new stomach. Approximately 10% of the patients will out eat this procedure by following a high calorie diet. At this point, the patient will regain their weight.

The third bariatric surgery version, which is the most popular method, is called the Roux-en-Y procedure. This operation reduces the stomach size, narrows the passage between the stomach and the small intestine and bypasses a large section of the small intestine. The bypassed portion of the intestine is where the most breakdown and absorption of food occurs. This procedure produces the highest long-term success rates. It does, however, subject the patient to possible malabsorption, since this may result in nutritional deficiencies. A lack of calcium, iron or vitamin B2 can lead to osteoporosis and anemia; so nutritional supplements must be used to avoid this.

With all bariatric procedures there are risks that can occur such as blood clots, wound problems and even possible death. Fortunately the benefits of weight loss, such as, rapid reversal of type 2 diabetes, lower blood pressure, better cardiac function and blood lipid levels, correction of sleep breathing problems, improved life quality and lowered risk of premature death, will overshadow the risk of complications. But, success does not come with the surgery alone. Following eating and fitness guidelines are also necessary to maintain the positive results this operation produces.
